Discover the history of the tournament<\/mark><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1987, the tournament was originally called the Strasbourg Grand Prix<\/strong>.<\/mark> As early as 1988<\/mark><\/strong>, the Alsace Tennis League<\/mark><\/strong> takes over the organization and renames the tournament WTA Strasbourg Tournament<\/mark><\/strong>. He then became one of the \u201chistoric\u201d events on the WTA calendar.<\/mark> <\/strong>In <\/strong>2008<\/strong>, <\/mark>the<\/mark> <\/strong><\/mark>French Tennis Federation<\/strong><\/mark><\/a> has officially become owner of the tournament.<\/mark> <\/strong>After supporting the tournament, the federation decided to hand the event over to a private entrepreneur<\/mark><\/strong>close to the tennis family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denis NAEGELEN<\/strong>, founder of the Quarterback agency,<\/strong><\/mark>Alsatian and ancien joueur de tennis professionnel<\/mark><\/strong> quickly showed an interest in the \"\u00a0IS<\/mark><\/strong>\". He therefore pledged to become the\u00a0\"owner\"<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0of the date in the WTA calendar<\/mark><\/strong> for the management and operation of the tournament from the 2010 edition onwards. At the end of 2019, Denis NAEGELEN bought the \u201cIS\u201d tournament from Quarterback, with the support of 3 other Alsatians : J\u00e9r\u00f4me FECHTER<\/strong>, Christophe SCHALK<\/strong>, <\/mark>and<\/mark> Pierre-Hugues HERBERT<\/strong>.<\/mark> Together they created the company HOPIS<\/mark><\/strong>, based in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Traditionally held the week before Roland-Garros<\/mark><\/strong>the #IS takes place under the same conditions as the Grand Slam<\/mark><\/strong>. Avec les m\u00eames balles et la m\u00eame terre battue, les Internationaux de Strasbourg, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s par MAMMOTION sont la final stretch<\/mark><\/strong> before Roland-Garros. The players really appreciate these conditions<\/strong><\/mark>which enables the tournament to attract an exceptional draw every year<\/strong><\/mark>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list of honorees<\/a> includes such renowned players as Jana NOVOTNA<\/mark><\/strong> (1989), Mary Joe FERNANDEZ<\/mark><\/strong> (1994), Lindsay DAVENPORT<\/strong> <\/mark>(1995, 1996), Steffi GRAF<\/mark><\/strong> (1997), Jennifer CAPRIATI<\/strong> <\/mark>(1999), Maria SHARAPOVA<\/mark><\/strong> (2010), Samantha STOSUR<\/mark><\/strong> (2015, 2017) Caroline GARCIA<\/mark><\/strong> (2016), Elina SVITOLINA<\/mark><\/strong> (2020, 2023) or even Madison KEYS.<\/mark> <\/strong>(2024). Other players such as Am\u00e9lie Mauresmo<\/mark><\/strong>, Caroline Wozniacki<\/mark><\/strong> or even Marion Bartoli<\/strong> <\/mark>came to play on the Alsatian clay courts.

In 2020, the #IS was the the world's first tournament<\/mark><\/strong>men's and women's tournament to welcome spectators to a professional tennis event, following the global health crisis. It was the tournament with the highest attendance, with 15,000 spectators present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, the tournament was held in reduced gauge at the end of May. This event was the first in France to introduce the health pass. The IS welcomed 12 Top 50 players, including 2 Top 10s and 4 Top 20s! The Czech Barbora KREJCIKOVA<\/mark><\/strong> added her name to the list of IS winners in this very special edition. Barbora also created a sensation by winning the French Grand Slam the following week : Roland-Garros<\/mark><\/strong>. She's proving to the world just how much Strasbourg is the best preparation for Roland Garros<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, the tournament has taken a real turn<\/mark><\/strong> since it is now part of the tournament category WTA 500<\/mark><\/strong>. So the #IS becomes the 3th<\/sup> largest event<\/mark><\/strong> in France, after Roland-Garros and the Rolex Paris Masters! This implies several changes<\/mark><\/strong> more prize-money, a more impressive draw, double the number of spectators, and a gradual restructuring of the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, the WTA Strasbourg tournament drew 37,500 spectators<\/a> durant la semaine du tournoi. Malgr\u00e9 la pluie, la premi\u00e8re \u00e9dition en WTA 500 a \u00e9t\u00e9 une franche r\u00e9ussite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, the WTA Strasbourg tournament drew 40,000 spectators<\/mark><\/strong> and it was Kazakhstan's Elena RYBAKINA who succeeded America's Madison KEYS. An exceptional sporting lineup, fairly mild weather: the 39th<\/sup> edition was a real success!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
